Experience the genuine Öland on the Alvar

We who live on and love Öland say that everything can be experienced here. That might be a slight exaggeration, but if you’re interested in nature experiences, relaxation, swimming, good food, cozy cafés, or one of Öland’s many art exhibitions, we promise you’ll have plenty of delightful experiences!

The nature here in southern Öland is beautiful, fascinating, exciting, and in many ways unique. Öland is home to 90 nature reserves and one national park — Blå Jungfrun.

Close to us, you’ll find gems like Beijershamn and the noble broadleaf forest of Vickleby.

Standing on the land ridge (which runs along the island’s western coast), you’re treated to a magnificent view over the Kalmar Strait. On the eastern side, a vast horizon opens up, where sea meets sky as far as the eye can see.

On the rugged limestone plain of Stora Alvaret (26,000 hectares), plants from all over the world meet. Here you’ll find alpine species like Iceland moss and alpine catchfly, growing side by side with southern European plants such as rock samphire and herb-Robert. Some species are found nowhere else in the world but here on Öland — like the Öland bedstraw and alvar wormwood. The area also boasts an incredible variety of wild orchids.

At the southern tip of the island lies Ottenby, home to Sweden’s tallest lighthouse, Långe Jan. The area features scenic hiking trails and one of Europe’s best birdwatching sites.

You’re warmly welcome to explore and experience southern Öland. Don’t hesitate to ask us for tips — we’re happy to share more!

A globally unique agricultural landscape.

Since the year 2000, we have been proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Officially, our heritage is called The Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland, recognizing the island’s farming traditions and the long history of land cultivation and development by local farmers.

What makes southern Öland truly special — and worthy of protection — is the harmonious relationship between people and nature. This is what defines our cultural landscape as a living World Heritage.

The World Heritage area stretches from Karlevi in the west to Gårdby in the east, and continues all the way down to the southern tip of the island. It’s a breathtaking landscape shaped over centuries through the interaction of natural forces, livestock, and human effort. Wetlands, alvar plains, cultivated fields, and the traditional row villages of southern Öland all contribute to this unique heritage.

We are proud of our World Heritage — feel free to ask us more, or visit the official website at sodraoland.com!
